What photographs does your website need?

Which images, at which sizes, and why your own photograph is worth more than any ready-made one.

On this page What size does each place need? Where does the subject go? What should I photograph? What must I never upload? Which practical points apply?

Your website works without photographs of your own: there is an image library you can use freely, and it takes no room from your storage. It is a starting point, though, not a destination. A visitor came to see your own work, and that is in no library.

What size does each place need?

Every image place on the website has a fixed shape. If your photograph has a different shape it will be cropped to fit — so it is worth knowing in advance what each place asks for.

A photograph well below the minimum — under 85% of it — is not accepted. That is not strictness: a blurred photograph cannot be fixed afterwards, while one that is cropped a little more than you would like can. Between that and the minimum, as in every other case, the system warns you and carries on.

Where does the subject go?

On the main image the title sits on the left. If your photograph's subject is on the left too, it will disappear under the lettering. Shoot with the subject on the right and a quiet left side — sky, a field, a wall. In portraits, keep the face in the upper half.

What should I photograph?

  • The field. A building site, an inspection, a measurement, an installation at work, a building under renovation — whatever shows your work where it happens. It is the most convincing picture you have.
  • The office. Drawings on a table, a screen with a design, the reception area. It shows there is a real place behind the telephone number.
  • The projects. The building or the plot you worked on — before and after, if you have both.
  • The team. A plain background, natural light, everyone photographed the same way.

What must I never upload?

The website's photographs are public. They do not come back. So never:

  • a screenshot of the application or of any program showing customer data;
  • a drawing, a survey plan or a document in which a customer's parcel reference, tax ID, name or address can be read;
  • a project sign, a contract, a permit or an email carrying someone else's details;
  • the face of a person who has not agreed to appear.

If a drawing is too good to leave out, photograph it at an angle or from a distance, so that the work shows and the details do not.

Which practical points apply?

  • A mobile phone is enough. Natural light, a clean lens, a steady hand.
  • Landscape for the wide places, portrait only for portraits.
  • An image up to 10 MB; JPG and PNG are the safest choice. HEIC is not accepted — if your iPhone produces it: Settings → Camera → Formats → «Most compatible».
  • Do not add a logo or a watermark on the photograph — the website already shows yours.

Every photograph you upload replaces one from the library. You do not have to do them all at once; start with the home page's main image, which is the first thing a visitor sees.
