# What do the statuses mean, and how do I close a project?

> What each status of a project and its items means, and how a project is closed through the closing check.

Last updated: 2026-10-14

A **project** and each of its **work items** have a status of their own. An item's payment is a third, separate label: a completed project can still have unpaid items.

| Label | Values |
| --- | --- |
| Project | New · In progress · On hold · Completed · Closed · Cancelled |
| Work item | Open · In progress · On hold · Completed · Cancelled |
| Item payment | Unpaid · Partially paid · Paid in full |

**Completed** means the work is finished; **Closed** means the project has been through the closing check and its summary has been saved. The only way to Closed is through closing.

### How do I start closing?

On the project's page press **Close the project…** — or choose «Closed» as the status, which opens the same window. It has three steps: **Check**, **How did it go?** and **Summary**.

### What is checked before the project closes?

| Stops the closing | Only warns |
| --- | --- |
| Your own items that are neither finished nor cancelled — you finish or cancel them from there, with a reason | Open tasks, unticked checklist points, a wait that is still running |
| Required checklist points, when the office has required points switched on — or you declare «not applicable», with a reason | Partner items still open (the partner changes their status), items with no effort estimate, no time recorded on the project, items with an unpaid balance |

The button tells you how many warnings you are closing with. Only someone who can see amounts sees the unpaid balance warning, and even then without the amount.

### What are «How did it go?» and the Summary?

«How did it go?» is optional: As planned, With small or With significant deviations, the reasons and a short note. The **Summary** shows what is frozen at closing; it does not change afterwards. From the project's **Closing summary** card you download it as a PDF or save it to the project's files.

### How does a closed project open again?

A closed project reopens only through **Reopen** on the closing summary: you write why, and which status it returns to. The closing and the reopening both stay in the project's history.

### Who closes and reopens?

Anyone who may create and change projects — in your office:
